How to Create a Clutter-Free Desk | Morningstar Storage

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or writer or someone whose home office has become a permanent remote workstation or classroom, having a neat, tidy workspace is one guaranteed way to boost your productivity. If you’re someone who always finds yourself with a desk covered in sticky notes, food wrappers, and coffee cups—no judgment—why not take the time this month to invest in the right tools to give yourself a leg up on organization?

At Morningstar Storage, we love organizing, decluttering, and helping our friends and neighbors maximize the space in their home. If you’re in need of some ideas to jump start your new organized life in 2021, we can help.

Create a clean slate.

To ensure you’re starting off on the right foot, clear everything off your desk. Take the time to disconnect computers, monitors, printers, and other peripherals and set them off to the side. Take a minute or two to dust and clean the desktop, then add—one at a time—the things you need for your work. Start with the big items, such as the monitor and the computer, and finish with any pens, pencils, notebooks, and other items you usually use.

As you add items to the desk, go ahead and work on cable management. Group cables together by type, and use zip ties or velcro straps to gather them together and keep them from getting tangled. If there’s something that doesn’t get used regularly—like a printer—keep it set aside for now.

Maximize your space.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to organize your desk, but spending money wisely can help. If you’re someone who uses a laptop as your primary computer, buying a stand can make a big difference in both desk space and ergonomics. It doesn’t just free up room underneath the computer for storage. It can also help reduce strain on your neck and back. Desktop organizers with space for pens, pencils, paper clips, and other often-used tools can save precious seconds when you need to take a note. In the moment it may feel minor, but all that time really adds up throughout the course of a day!

Clear out your files.

When’s the last time you spent a few minutes looking through old documents? How organized is your filing cabinet? We’ll wait . . .

Okay, that’s what we thought.

One of the biggest sources of clutter in an office can be outdated paperwork that hasn’t been filed. Now’s the time to look through your cabinets, closets, and drawers and pull out any old receipts, empty phone boxes, and unused cables. Go ahead and toss or recycle those.

Once you’ve cleared out that clutter, set to the task of organizing the remaining documents. It may be safe to assume you can remove anything older than seven years and go ahead and toss it—preferably through shredding. If you don’t own a shredder, check your local office supply store. They often do bulk shredding by the pound.

Put unneeded documents and equipment into storage.

If you don’t need immediate access to things but still want to keep them for any reason, don’t stash them in closets or keep them hanging around to clutter up your now clean office. Instead, visit your local Morningstar Storage facility. We offer affordable storage units that can help keep your home and office organized. Your electronic equipment will be protected from extreme temperatures in a heated or cooled unit, and our spaces are perfect for document storage.
