Bringing a new baby into your home is a magical experience (when you look past the lack of sleep and dirty diapers). What’s less magical is the fact that babies grow fast and need new clothes every six months. It really does feel like you’re constantly cleaning out dresser drawers to make space for new pajamas, shirts, onesies, and more.
The speed with which kiddos grow often creates a storage predicament, especially if you know more little ones are in your future plans. What do you do with baby stuff once it’s outgrown? How do you store it for future use?
At Morningstar Storage, we love the idea of hand-me-downs and reusing everything you can when it comes to your growing family. That’s why our storage units are perfect temporary homes for all the stuff your baby no longer needs. Whether your plans are to sell them in the future or keep it for your next little bundle of joy, learn how to properly and safely store baby clothes and more for your “someday” at one of our convenient locations.
If there’s one item you’ll wind up with a lot of as new parents, it’s clothes. We’re not going to get into the laundry list of why you might need multiple outfit changes over the course of a day, but it’s a long list. And all those clothes add up, especially as your babies become toddlers. For everything that you don’t throw away because of stains, you’ll likely need a place to store it until you can decide what to do with it. That’s where storage units come in. They’ll keep your kids’ closets from overflowing and allow you to save the basement or attic space for bigger items that need storage.
Regardless of whether you’re keeping clothes for your next baby or to donate (or sell) to someone else, give everything a good wash and then pack them into vacuum-sealed storage bags. This will help them take up less space. You’re now ready to pack them away in boxes or totes. Just be sure to clearly label the box with important details such as general size, gender, and seasonality (winter, summer, etc.).
Toys and Furniture
Clothes can be made more compact and stowed away in smaller boxes—but what about your baby’s larger toys? Things like gliders, rockers, and bouncers take up a lot of space. Ensure they’re stored safely by disassembling them as much as you can and storing all the parts together in one place. If something can’t be taken apart without a lot of trouble, try to store it in a secure place where it won’t run the risk of falling over. Never pile boxes on top of it, especially if it’s something like a glider.
Dreading the struggles of reassembling cribs and other furniture? A great way to keep the instructions safe is to use a plastic pouch and zip-tie it to the bottom of mattress springs, on furniture legs, etc. You can also tape a zipped storage bag with extra parts and Allen wrenches to parts for easy assembly and disassembly.
Storing car seats can be a tricky proposition, because unlike gliders, bouncers, and cribs, there’s an expiration date on their use. Each car seat clearly lists the date of manufacture and the final date that it can be used by, so make sure you’re adhering to that information when you put it into storage.
We don’t expect that you’d keep the box for car seats—especially if you have multiple ones—but don’t throw away the instruction guide, even if you’re putting it into storage. A lot can happen in between kids, and you don’t want to forget how to install a car seat when you really need to!
