Have You Considered Using Self-Storage as an Airbnb or VRBO Host? | Morningstar Storage

Are you knee-deep in managing your short-term rental properties and constantly on the lookout for new ways to streamline your hosting operation?

Managing a short-term rental on Airbnb or VRBO is no small task. There are plenty of logistics to juggle around renting out your personal home, and the last thing you want to worry about is the safety of your things.

That’s where self-storage facilities come into play. They’re not just for stashing away old junk these days — in fact, they could be the secret ingredient to taking your Airbnb game to the next level! Here’s how.

The Challenge of Airbnb Hosting

First things first, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty challenges of being an Airbnb host.

Sure, it’s all sunshine and five-star reviews on the surface, but behind the scenes, it’s a totally different story.

From managing bookings to ensuring your home is always guest-ready, it’s a never-ending balancing act. And let’s not even get started on the headache of storage space—or lack thereof.

32% of people surveyed said they’d be able to organize their homes better if they just had more storage space — but let’s face it, many people just have quite a bit of stuff

Regardless, if you’re renting out your personal space as an Airbnb or VRBO to generate passive income, you likely don’t want to leave some of your more personal items out in the open. That’s why many are turning to self-storage units to act as a home base for a variety of personal effects, overflow furniture, and other miscellaneous items.

The Benefits of Self-Storage Facilities for Short-Term Rental Owners

Regardless of whether you’re renting out your personal space to make a little extra money, or managing multiple short-term rental properties all at once, investing in a storage space comes with quite a few benefits.

Flexibility in Managing Your Space

Picture this: It’s peak summertime, and your Airbnb is fully booked with beach-loving guests who are ready to soak up the sunshine. You want to go the extra mile by offering beach chairs, extra towels, sunscreen, water toys, and so much more — but when the winter hits you have nowhere to store these bulky, seasonal items.

With the ability to store seasonal items and personal belongings off-site, you can free up precious space for your guests to spread out and relax without feeling cramped. Plus, storing seasonal items in a safe, temperature-controlled space ensures that they will make it through the off-season without damage, saving you money from having to replace these items year after year.

Security and Enhanced Guest Experiences

Now, let’s talk about peace of mind.

As short-term rental hosts, the safety and security of our belongings are paramount. You don’t want to be worried that a priceless piece of art is going to get caught in the crosshairs of a boisterous bachelorette party, or that a family vacation is going to mean a disastrous end for your favorite piece of outdoor furniture.

That’s where self-storage facilities come in handy. With secure storage options for valuable or fragile items, you can rest easy knowing that everything is locked up tight, reducing the risk of damage or theft during guest stays.

Having a central place where you can rotate items and furniture in and out means setting the stage in your VRBO or Airbnb to perfectly fit your current guest’s needs.

Convenience and Organization

Who has time to rummage through cluttered closets when you’re in the midst of the busy season with your rental property? Not you! With self-storage, you’ll always have easy access to stored items whenever you need them, plus handy organizational tools to keep your rental properties looking tidy and welcoming at all times.

Maximizing Efficiency and Profitability

At the end of the day, it’s all about keeping your guests happy. By providing clean, clutter-free accommodations, you’re not only improving their overall experience but also increasing the likelihood of glowing reviews and repeat bookings.

When you crunch the numbers, self-storage is a no-brainer. Compared to the cost of renting larger living spaces to accommodate your storage needs, opting for a self-storage unit is the perfect budget-friendly solution that leaves more money in your pocket.

And let’s remember the most precious commodity of all: time. With streamlined cleaning and turnover processes thanks to less clutter, you’ll have more time to focus on what really matters—providing the best level of hospitality to your guests.

Tips for Utilizing Self-Storage Facilities Effectively

Now that you’re ready to explore self-storage solutions for yourself, here are a few tips to help you find the perfect facility for your individual needs.

Location, Location, Location

Location is key when it comes to selecting a self-storage facility, so be sure to choose one that’s convenient for you and your guests. And don’t forget to check out the security features and amenities to ensure your belongings are in good hands.

Keep Things Straight

Get creative with your storage solutions by utilizing the right labeling and categorization systems to keep everything neat and tidy — and easy to locate at a moment’s notice! And don’t be afraid to rotate seasonal items in and out as needed to maximize space.

Scale with Your Business

Last but not least, regularly inspect all of your stored items for any signs of damage or expiration. And don’t forget to update your storage arrangements as your hosting needs evolve! You can always size up or down on units when you store with Morningstar Storage.

So there you have it—self-storage facilities are a game-changer for Airbnb hosts looking to streamline operations and enhance the guest experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I pay? Can I pay online?

We have several ways that you can pay, and they are all FEE FREE! Online, by phone, in- person, or auto-pay. We strongly suggest using the ACH Autopay method. It safely and automatically transfers your payment directly to us for an always on time payment from your checking account on the first of every month. If you wish to pay online, you will need to create an account with the original email you used to reserve your unit, as well as your unit number.
  • Do you prorate in and out?

Absolutely! We do not want you to have to pay for any days in the month that you’re not storing with us! For instance, if you sign your lease on the 11th of the month, your first payment is only for the 11th through the end of the month. On your move-out, we only ask that you give us a 10 day notice and that you vacate no later than the 15th. If you abide by those two easy rules, we will refund you for the entire second half of the month!
  • Do I have to stay a certain amount of time?

At Morningstar you are never locked in to a long term lease. Stay as long or as little as your needs apply. We offer month to month leases with prorating in and out.
  • Do I need Insurance?

If it’s worth storing then it must be worth protecting! We offer low-cost coverage for most of life’s mishaps for as little as 40 cents a day. So, even in the unlikely event that you will ever have a claim, it’s comforting to know that the coverage that we can offer protects your belongings in transit on the way to our facility, and there is never a deductible.
  • Do you require a deposit to hold a unit?

We do not require a deposit to hold a unit for you.
